As a lifelong user of both operating systems, i believe that the rift is not as big as some make it seem. But it is definitely there. The windows operating system is the most widely used in the world, yet too many computer problems are caused b this operating system itself. I believe that is the problem with wanting to make improvements without really fixing the core problems.
That is where i personally think mac has done a good job, and as they gain market share, as they have in the Visual Arts industry, many software and hardware makers will develop mac compatible products.
So it really comes down to choice of how you want to work with your computer and what you are willing to put up with.
